Benefiting Hurricane Relief through Samaritan’s Purse 
On November 2nd we will be hosting a “Book Swap” where elementary students can each bring in up to 5 gently used books they no longer read. The day of the swap students can bring up to $5 to purchase books (all books will sell for $1). All of the money made will be donated to Samaritan's Purse and their hurricane relief efforts. We encourage students to look for ways they can earn money to use to purchase books at the swap, perhaps by raking leaves or doing extra chores. Parenting with Love and Logic Conference, 11/17

Friday, November 17 6:30-9pm at ICS. Do you ever find parenting to be your hardest job? Are you looking for parenting tools that work? Join us to hone your skills using Love and Logic principles. $15 per person and scholarships are available upon request. 2 HS Upperclassmen Chosen for FBI Teen Academy Camp!

Congrats to Senior Ben Colby and Junior Tanner Lee for being accepted to the first FBI Teen Academy Camp. The two will spend the day on October 20th at the FBI Agency learning about the workings of the FBI. Both boys had to fill out an application and write an essay explaining why they would like to attend the camp, what they would hope to learn and how their experience would better their school and their community. Ben and Tanner were selected along with other students from High Schools around the state. Congratulations to these young men who will represent ICS well!

The class members are available this entire school year to do any work you may need done around your house in exchange for a donation to our class fund. Annual Fund Celebration

God is so good and he made that very obvious at Saturday's event...the weather was amazing, the crowd was enthusiastic and the food was incredible! Thank you too, ICS Community, for making Saturday evening's celebration such a success! A HUGE thank you to the many volunteers who helped pull it all off. If you happen to see Tara Heiden, please make sure to give her your thanks. She made this event a special one full of fun and fellowship. A big thanks to our all of our sponsors who made the evening possible.

PSAT/NMSQT Exam at ICS, 10/11

This exam will be given to all ICS sophomores and juniors. In order to provide this opportunity, high school classes will not be held this day. 9th and 12th grade students will each have class activities. After the exam, your student will be dismissed for the day! The cost for the PSAT exam is $16 which will be billed to your FACTS account. Please contact Miriam Phinney with any questions or concerns at mphinney@intermountainchristian.org.

Children's Art Gallery Fall Theme Due 10/16

FABULOUS FALL  is the theme this quarter for the Children's Art Gallery. The Gallery is for students Pre-K through 5th grade. Winners will receive a special fall treat and have their artwork displayed in the elementary hallway. Students may create art using any type of medium (paint, chalk, colored pencils, etc) to create their work. Entries are due to Mrs. Lee by October 16th.

Parent Teacher Conference Childcare

ICS is providing FREE childcare for your conferences. This is NOT a part of the aftercare program. 
If your child goes to aftercare then please make sure to sign your child out and take them to Conference Care. Signs will be posted and a Conference Care schedule will be emailed out so you will know where to take your child for free conference care. Children may only be in Conference Care while you are in your conferences. Otherwise they need to be in Aftercare. Conference care is for ICS students only. Please keep all other children with you during your conferences. More details to coming soon.

Service Hour Opportunity

Lifeway Book Fair

This exam will be given to all ICS sophomores and juniors. In order to provide this opportunity, high school classes will not be held this day. 9th and 12th grade students will each have class activities. After the exam, your student will be dismissed for the day! ICS Reading Club
Our October Read is one chapter (The Doughnut) from Homer Price by Robert McCloskey. Betweem our three libraries (SLCounty, Salt Lake City and Murray) there are about 11 copies. It is my hope our readingcommunity will all have an opportunity to read Homer Price before our gathering on Ocotber 11th.

In November, our book for our ICS Reading Club will be Little Britches by Ralph Moody. Our three local library systems have a total of 6 books and your very own ICS Library has one copy.

Dinner Night Out Reminder!

4th and 5th Grade Boys Invited to Play MS Soccer

If interested in being on the C Team, come to practice Tuesday, September 5th at 3:30pm, Mountview Park, 1651 Fort Union Blvd. MUST HAVE shin guards, cleats and water bottle with you. All practices are at Mountview Park M-TH, 3:30-5:15 unless a game is scheduled. Players will ride the bus to Mountview and will need to be picked up FROM THE PARK at 5:15PM. On game days, the players will ride the bus to the games and need to be picked up at the game sites by the time the C-Team games are over....typically around 6:00PM. GENERAL EVENTS
We wanted to let you know that we will be enjoying the eclipse, school-wide, on Monday! Our eclips glasses have arrived! They meet the recommended safety requirements and are NASA approved/CE/ISO/12312-2 certified. We will all meet in the gym Monday form 10:15-10:30am for a short eclipse lesson and safety instructions. We will hten go outside to watch the beginning of the eclipse together. The peak is at 11:33am so classes will likely go out again around that time. Looking forward to a fun and memorable ICS event!

PARKING LOT CLOSED NEXT WEEK
The parking lot will be CLOSED from Tuesday, May 30 at 8:00 AM to Saturday, June 3 at 4:00 PM for repairs and recoating. We recognize there are some basketball camps happening and many employees will be wrapping up the year. However, this was the least conflicting week to do this important work before summer camp begins and it gets too hot and the repairs are considered less effective. Please plan to park on the top level of the Millrock parking garage across the road and walk around the grass on the east side through an opening we will be creating at the main entrance. This week ICS Dance will be leading chapel at 10:55. Friends and family are welcome to join us for a special time of worship. Please have the girls wear their leo and tights underneath their clothes. They will be excused at 10:30 to come to the gym to get ready. We will help the 1st-3rd grade students bobby pin their wreaths in their hair.

Elementary Art Show Thursday, May 4th in conjunction with the Elementary Music Program. Come early to see the beautiful art work of your sons and daughters. Art will be displayed in the gym.

FROM OUR LIBRARIAN

Strive to find personal reading time and usher your children into a love of reading. When your children observe you listening to a story while making dinner, folding laundry or running on the treadmill, they recognize you as someone who values books. There are free audio book sites such as https://librivox.org/search, and the Salt Lake County Library continues to add to their wonderful stash of e-books. As written in The Common Sense Media, "Parents can encourage reading," they explain, "by keeping print books in the home, reading themselves, and setting aside time daily for their children to read." Jordan Shapiro follows that report with, "At the end of the day, how our children read and what our children read says a lot more about adult attitudes about books than it does about the kids. Model the behaviors and attitudes you want your children to emulate."
Without saying a word, let's turn our attitude about books upside down. Action is powerful!

Attention all ICS girls! Our First Annual Father Daughter Ball is THIS Friday, April 21st from 6:30-8:30pm. A HUGE LION CONGRATULATIONS! Our HS Debate Team won the 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in a tight 79-76 over second place Panguitch! Coach Jacqueline Croswhite and the team have put in a long season of prep and it paid off with a championship.

March 15th in elementary chapel, an ICS mom, Melinda Benson, shared her newly published children's book with your child. "Leave Me Alone!" LIONS ROAR
Jonathan Lathrop, Class of 2017, was named to the 2017 1A All Star Basketball Team. There will be a game at Olympus High School on Friday, March 17th at 3:00pm. Congrats for being a leader on and off the basketball court!

Special congratulations to Rachel Jensen for qualifying to compete in the Utah State National Geographic Bee! Rachel took a competitive exam in January, and her scores landed her this opportunity! The state bee will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017. One champion from each state and territory will advance to the National Geographic Bee Championship, which will be held May 14-18 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. We are all very proud of her and wish her the best of luck at the state level! Way to go, Rachel!

Special congratulations to Rachel Jensen for qualifying to compete in the Utah State National Geographic Bee! Rachel took a competitive exam in January, and her scores landed her this opportunity! The state bee will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017. One champion from each state and territory will advance to the National Geographic Bee Championship, which will be held May 14-18 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. We are all very proud of her and wish her the best of luck at the state level! Way to go, Rachel!

FIELD TRIP
Tuesday, March 14th grades K-5 will travel to the Children’s Theatre of Utah to view a performance of Aesop’s Fables. The show will last from 9:45-11:00. We will take the school buses so no parent drivers will be necessary. A bus ride is a field trip in and of itself for our students! Students should wear field trip shirts.

The Speech & Debate team leapt into action at the Jaguar Joust this weekend. Sonya Wirkus and Cana Buckley closed out National Extemp with 1st and 2nd place respectively! Cana also took 2nd in Lincoln Douglas debate. Eric Henry & Tanner Lee posted a 5th place finish in Public Forum debate. The Lions are preparing for their Region and State tournaments in March. During the month of February, elementary students are encouraged to join in a healthy reading competition against the other elementary classes! The winning class will receive a special reward on Dr. Seuss's Birthday, March 2nd. PLease look for a red paper that is coming home. What family should be allowed to grow up together without sharing in the lives of Laura, Mary and their parents? Audio books may be one answer. And remember this important detail... when you learn how to listen to a story, you learn how to learn.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
ICS chapter National Honor Society is accepting applications from current sophomores, juniors and seniors. BEGG FAMILY UPDATE
As you may know, the Begg family had a fire at their house this weekend. We are grateful no one was injured and a lot of their belongings look to be salvageable. We appreciate all the people who are coming forth wanting to help them in some way. While there will likely be ways we can support them in the near future, for now all of their immediate needs are being taken care of. We will keep you posted as needs become known about ways you can help.

ICS DANCE
ICS DANCE is looking for a couple of female high school students to help with the 1st-3rd grade dance team on Tuesdays from 3:10-4:20. The students will assist Mrs Lee by helping with small groups and class organization. It would be an 8 class commitment up to the performance in April. If you are interested contact Mrs Lee by email lee_j@slcics.org

FROM OUR LIBRARIAN
How is your “Reading Streak” going? There is a link between reading aloud and school success established in science and research: the child who comes to school with a large vocabulary does better than the child who comes to school with little familiarity with words and a low vocabulary. Where are children going to be hearing the most words? The language in books is very rich and contains complete sentences. The language is more complicated and sophisticated.

READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY
During the month of February elementary students are encouraged to join in a healthy reading competition against the other elementary classes! The winning class will receive a special reward on Dr. Seuss's Birthday, March 2nd. Please look for a red flyer coming home that will allow you to keep track of reading minutes for the month and must be turned in with a parent's signature by March 1st in order to count.

VITAMIN UPDATE


A special thanks to all who participated in our December vitamin drive. This is one of the children who came into the medical clinic and received vitamins. ICS was able to equip them with a 6 month supply!

PRACTICE ACT
All ICS sophomores and juniors will take a practice ACT on Wednesday Feb. 8th during the school day. Sophomores and juniors will attend their first block and chapel and then the ACT will begin (their classes will be cancelled). They will finish about 3:15. A short lunch break will be provided.
If desired, students will be able to receive 2 hours of personalized tutoring and a consultation based on their testing for $80 at After Class Tutoring in Draper (801-878-4105). HOMECOMING RECAP

CONGRATS to the 2017 Mr. ICS, Sophomore Kohwan Begg. Homecoming Week festivities came to a close Saturday night at the High School Homecoming Dance. Both girls and boys teams had a full week of basketball games. The Alumni Dinner Friday night was a huge success with almost 40 alums present, reminiscing and enjoying the wonderful things going on here at ICS.

The Elementary Art Department is sending out a new challenge… “Let Freedom Ring”. Students and parents are asked to work together to create a piece that expresses “what FREEDOM means to them”. The artists are encouraged to use various mediums and techniques that would express the theme in a creative way. Compositions can be created on paper or canvas. Sizes are 8x10 up to 11x12. Please turn in your art work to Mrs. Lee by Thursday, February 2nd. Pieces to be displayed in the Gallery will be selected from the entries. Contest is for Preschool – 5 Grades. For questions contact Mrs. Lee at lee_j@slcics.org

ICS Dance Begins Spring Semester Classes
Classes begin Tuesday, January 24th for 1st-3rd grades and Thursday, January 26th for 4th-6th grades.
Class times: 3:20-4:10 in the library. A $20 fee will be charged to FACTS along with a costume expense TBA. Performances will be off campus at Eastmont Elementary: 4th-6th will perform on Friday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m. and 1st-3rd will perform on Saturday, April 29th at 1:00 p.m. There will be a mandatory rehearsal on Tuesday, April 25th at Eastmont: 1st-3rd will be 4:00-4:30 and 4th-6th will be 4:30-5:00. ICS Dance will be performing prior to the High School presentation of Hello Dolly. Please read attachment for more information and for registration form. Next week following dance rehearsals there will be a brief parent meeting to go over the happenings for this semester. We will also be asking for your daughter’s dress size for costume. If you’ve begun your 2017 “Reading Streak” I encourage you to keep going. If you’ve not yet begun, start today! Alice Ozma, author of the The Reading Promise says, “The books are important, but the conversations they started and the bonds they created are what really matter.” Enjoy some “bonding” time today!

Hot Lunch
A few things clarify about hot lunch.  Fridays Mr. Glen now has off and the Junior class will be serving us pizza. This purchase for elementary is still made through lunch forms. For MS/HS cash can be brought on Fridays and purchased at that time.  In addition to this change there will also no longer be breakfast served on Fridays.
