Music

Music is a creation of God, and He has given it to us as a good gift to be enjoyed. The ICS Music Department seeks to develop in students a love and appreciation for music and the skills to be stewards of this good gift. We see music as part of knowing and enjoying our great God.

ICS offers many ways to experience music whether it is through concert band, jazz band, chapel band, pep band, vocal ensembles or handbell choirs. One of the greatest experiences ICS offers is Music Tour. This outreach to underprivileged children in New Mexico and Arizona is available only to high school ensemble and handbell choir students.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

ICS students have ample opportunity to participate in the instrumental program. Course offerings for band include 5th grade Beginning Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band. Students participating in the ICS Band Program play a wide variety of repertoire from classical to cinema scores to arrangements of modern and pop music.  Along with the larger ensembles, many of our students also participate in small ensembles. Each student involved in the band program will participate in two concerts annually. Students participating in the concert band also travel to Los Angeles for the Biola Band Festival.

Students also have the option to participate in a variety of handbell choirs beginning in the 6th grade. Our High School handbell choir is an auditioned group that plays advanced to professional level literature. The highlight of the year for High School Bells and Ensemble is the annual Music Ministry Tour to the four corners area and Navajo Nation. Student musicians travel for a week to various mission schools and churches ministering to the Native American people groups.

SECONDARY VOCAL MUSIC

Middle school students have the opportunity to participate in the middle school choir currently under the direction of Tim Drisdom. Students sing various styles of music while learning intermediate vocal technique, reading music, and singing multiple parts. Middle school choir performs two concerts annually.

High School students may audition for the vocal ensemble. High School ensemble sings a variety of literature from classical to modern pop music.  Students in ensemble learn more advanced vocal technique as well as working on intermediate to advanced choral literature. Much time is spent in preparation for multiple concerts around the Salt Lake Valley during the holiday season and the annual Music Ministry Tour.

Handbells

Every year the high point of the Bells and Ensemble experience is our music tour in the Southwest! This year our tour will be March 4-9, 2019. We will be making our usual rounds to our friends at churches and schools on the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni reservations. This tour is a rich ministry opportunity and a wonderful cultural experience. We try to keep the cost for this trip as low as possible but also want to assure we are not a burden to our hosts on the reservations. This cost also covers transportation via motor coach in order to ensure our students are safe and comfortable all the way through the desert.

Tour cost: $250 per student, payable in 5 monthly installments of $50 beginning in October.
If finances are a concern, please contact Nathan Hope.

high school ensemble choir

Our high school ensemble choir is comprised of ninth through twelfth graders who desire to glorify the Lord through song. The Ensemble Choir is very active in their concert schedule and particularly enjoy sharing their gift at various venues during the Christmas and Easter seasons. Culminating their year, the ensemble choir, along with the hand bell choir, will go on a music tour travelling the dusty roads of rural New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. They minister to children at mission schools and provide worship at churches along the way. This tour usually takes place in late spring and is the highlight for many ICS high schoolers.
